Wedding Photographs, Fanari

Day forty-nine, Greece. Kalambaka is behind me. I drove the coast, past Thessaloniki, a short stop in Kavala, and found a place for tonight near the little fishing village of Fanari on the Thracian Sea.

I am sitting on a rock listening to the water and watching the sun go.

A bride and groom have chosen this spot for their photographs. Two photographers unpack. One walks back and forth with a camera making video. The other arranges the couple, telling the story of their first day as a married pair in pictures.

These photographs are for the whole of a life. Their children will hold them one day and study how their mother and father looked. The grandparents will stand them on a chest of drawers and tell their friends about the wedding. In twenty years, brothers and cousins will turn the pages of an album and remember this particular gold on this particular water.

I used to earn my living behind a camera and I never once thought about it that way.

A good moment to be sitting on a rock.
